windshield survey. All streets are driven, but the survey team stops to record
data only for trees that appear to present a high or extreme risk as defined within
the specifications. Other commonly selected attributes are vacant planting sites
and specific tree species. This helps to locate susceptible trees during an insect
infestation or disease epidemic.
Tree surveys for limited attributes can also be conducted using remotesensing information from aerial observation, photography, or satellite
imagery. For example, this type of survey can rapidly identify trees that are
severely stressed, high-risk, or dead. Remote sensing is also effective for
calculating canopy cover of the community.

Complete Tree Inventories
A complete tree inventory includes all the trees-and often all available
planting sites-in an urban forest. Typically, in a municipal environment,
that means all the street trees in the public right-of-way and, in many cases,
the municipal parks and other municipally-owned land. For managed private
tree populations, this type of inventory includes all trees within the defined
geographic limits.
