A physical marker such as a metal tree tag, bar-coded tag, radio-frequency
identification (RFID) tag, or QR Code Tag, may be the surest method of
finding a specific tree again that cannot easily be linked to some permanent
reference object. Future tree growth must be considered when attaching
tags to trees so that they are not enveloped by the tree too quickly. Usually
screws or nails protrude from the tree at least 1 in (2.5 cm) to allow for some
growth. Protruding fasteners should be either high or low on the tree to avoid
personal injury. Tags should be positioned on the least visible side of the tree
to reduce vandalism and tag removal.

Tree Information-Standard
The following tree attributes are recommended for complete inventories that
will be used on a day-to-day basis for urban forestry management.

Species

Trees should be identified by genus and species, using botanical names as
found in standard published reference works (in the United States, a standard
reference is USDA's PLANTS database, http://plants.usda.gov). Common
names are often included for the sake of nonprofessionals, but they can
be ambiguous or misleading if botanical names are not also referenced.
