EDITOR'S NOTE

2014 Was a Very
Good Year for KBIS
I have only been to two rounds of KBIS
so far, but I will say this second show in Las
Vegas was hugely different than the first. In
a word, it was definitely more "alive." The way
in which I traversed KBIS in 2013 would not
have worked this year, but I was new then,
and now I've learned.
Instead of jumping from booth to booth
with no set plan, this year I scheduled my
appointments in 15-minute increments, and I
did my best to follow those to a "t." If I had not
walked the show that way, I would have really missed out on learning
about all of the trends and innovation that were apparent in every
corner. I still wasn't able to see everything - the sheer amount of booth
space and attendees made that impossible in three days - but I made
a great effort.
My colleagues and I were even able to fit a few of the educational
sessions into our packed schedules, as well as some of the awards
announcements and the 30 Under 30 and State of the Industry
presentations. You can read about all of this coverage, including the
latest and greatest in kitchen and bath products and innovations, in
our KBIS section on pages 31-46.
A lot of the trends I witnessed at KBIS 2014 are reflected in various
columns in this issue, including the fact that clients want their kitchens
and bathrooms to be functional - yet still attractive. Accessible
doesn't have to mean ugly, which is the message in the Universal
Design column. People also want a better quality of life, which can
be accomplished through purposeful design, and this is discussed in
Industry Viewpoint.
Cabinetry today is all about more storage options and less
ornamentation, which is the topic of Trends in this issue, and keeping
up with the times through technology and design is always important,
as reflected in both Dealer Dish and Solutions. In this issue, we also
introduce our People and Places section, which gives you an up-close
look at the movers and shakers in our industry.
We at K+BB hope you had an amazing time at KBIS and Design &
Construction Week - I know we did - and we'd love to hear about what
you learned during your experience. n
