EDITOR'S NOTE

An Alien in Italia

I went to Milan last month to attend
EuroCucina and the International Bathroom
Exhibition. Lucky for me, almost everyone
was bilingual, but it was encouraged to try
and speak at least a little Italian from time to
time. At that I failed miserably.
I had learned a few words and phrases
before I left, but I kept getting them wrong.
Instead of saying "Bonjourno," I kept saying
"Prego," which literally means "Please" and
"You're Welcome." It definitely isn't a greeting.
I'd randomly say "Thank You (Grazie) because I liked the way it
sounded, and once I even said "Oui," which is French, and the cab
driver looked at me sympathetically. I don't actually speak French, but
I know it much better than Italian, so I thought, what the heck?
The visit to the actual fair was highly successful, I'm happy to report,
and this issue highlights several bathroom and kitchen trends that were
prevalent, including kitchen technology innovations and hammans in
