closet space to the bedroom.
"We quadrupled the size and function of this master bath," said Drysdale, "and the use of the white tile with the windows means it's always
bright. It is now the owner's favorite room."
She and her client nixed the bathroom/shower combo and decided
on individual tub and shower areas, while separating the main sink and
tub area from the shower and toilet. When Drysdale saw the large, wide
Askew Kohler tub, she said she almost fell over.
"I am someone known to use contemporary art in my projects," she
added, "and this was the ﬁrst tub I had seen with that sculptural quality -
it looked almost like a piece of art. And its dimensions and appearance
demand your attention."
Because Drysdale likes to make a view-on-entry statement in the
rooms she designs, it was quickly decided that this beautiful tub could
anchor the main view into the room.
"My client, a beginning art collector, fell in love immediately with the
distinctive tub," she said. "It was to become the art statement of the bathroom, and all additional choices developed from this pivotal decision."
One example is the use of a solid tile without patterns to allow the tub
to stand out and not take away from it. The mirror - framed in a conventional Thassos base tile - reﬂects the light coming in and enhances the
space and highlights the ﬁxture. The custom vanity was matched in the
same color as the tub, and the above-counter-mounted sinks - also from
Kohler - are highlighted by medicine cabinets mirrored on the inside and
out. A Kohler Askew toilet in the water closet also matches the tub.
The modern yet classical shower area - somewhat outside of the
main space - features a bench and two skylights, one inside and one out.
Although this area is centered with one of the bathroom windows, there is
no angle that allows a view inside from neighboring houses.
"I wanted to express in a crisp, clean way a sense of elegant materials," said Drysdale."Every choice was made to provide detail and expand
one's sense of space and reﬂect light."
The shower area was placed just outside
the main space and features a bench and
two skylights - one inside and one out.

Challenges/Solutions
A house built in the 1950s has smaller dimensions than today's homes,
and Drysdale said the 8-ft. ceilings made the space feel compressed and
unpleasant. She had the challenge of making the master bathroom feel
larger, adding that she considers the feeling of space to be an expression
of luxury.

Drysdale's Design Tips
ö Design the space to be used as efﬁciently as possible.
ö Create a strong idea or feature, and then build around it.
ö Always build in storage - medicine cabinets, space below
vanities, recesses in the shower.
ö A bathroom can look unorganized quickly, so it's important
to understand your clients' storage needs.
ö Accommodate a place for the clutter.
ö Even if you are designing for a single person, they may not
always be single. Make sure there is room for another person.
