LEFT For the reach-in closet,
Hofmann worked with the
contractor to design shoe storage with pullout shelves deep
enough for two shoes front to
back, cubbies for folded items
and accessories like purses, as
well as some short hanging for
blouses and skirts.
BELOW Installing the linear drain
against the shower bench was
a challenge, but its location prevents users from standing directly
on it and backing up water flow.

"Our style goal was to stay classic for the best
fit with the home but to add modern clean lines,
storage solutions and as much daylight as possible
with transom windows," said Hofmann.

STORAGE SOLUTIONs. The

contractor built
custom medicine cabinets with casing trim,
which is reminiscent of how it might have
been when the house was originally built. An
electrical outlet was added inside the cabinets for charging small appliances and to declutter the sink area.

MODERN, CLEAN LINES. A linear drain near the
shower bench blends in with the tile, and its
location prevents users from standing directly
on it, backing up water flow. A horizontal
shampoo niche extends across one wall of
the shower, and a decorative glass accent tile
band connects the shower and vanity areas.
A tile "rug" provides linear detail on the main
bathroom floor.

ORIGINAL DETAILS. Although the original
wainscoting was maintained throughout the
entire house and the kitchen pass-through
is original, Hofmann wanted to go a touch
more modern in the master bath. She chose
subway tiles but changed their proportion for
an updated twist.
One challenge Hofmann noted was trying
to keep the character of the home's original design without going overboard. Carrara marble
was used since it could have been an original
material to the house, but it is also timeless as
it is the material of choice for many of today's
bathroom projects. While the faucet styling is
traditional, the designer chose lever handles,
which are easier to control than cross handlestyle handles.

Te a m I n t e r a c t i o n
THE HOMEOWNERS HAD AN architect in place since
the home's renovations had been completed over
a year and a half earlier, so the drawings were already in place. But by the time it came time to do
the master bath suite, they wanted to make a few
changes, such as adding a bench and paying close
attention to where the drain would be located.
Hofmann said she and the architect worked well
with each other - neither trying to take over the
entire project.
She makes it a practice to take all of her clients
on showroom visits to narrow down selections;
they do not look at every product offered in a
showroom. She also puts their ideas in Houzz
idea books so they can review those and leave less
opportunity for regret later.
"I find that visual communication works very
well with clients," added Hofmann. "Most people want to remodel once and not again in 10 or
15 years, so I like to pay attention to the details
earlier on."
