Get Smart During KBIS 2017
The Voices from the Industry (VFTI) educational platform will make a huge comeback for KBIS 2017. More than 70 hourlong classes will be offered in four different tracks: Design & Inspiration, Focus on the Customer, Sales & Marketing
and Business Management. New to this year's VFTI program are Interactive Labs, which focus on two tracks: Design &
Inspiration and Sales & Marketing and include interactive sessions ranging from trend forecasting to pricing strategies.
All classes are eligible for NKBA CEU credits, and some sessions are also eligible for credits from NAHB and NARI.
The VFTI sessions will take place in the South Hall meeting rooms during all three days of KBIS 2017,

Design & Inspiration Track
Th is session will teach the basics of architectural
photography, with a small portion focusing on what to
look for in a professional photographer, including usage
rights, their methodology and whether your goals match.
Photographers who don't specialize in interiors -
including many pros - often don't understand which,
if any, built-in lights to use (the lights you meticulously
specified). Often photographers use only natural light or
add a touch of their own. Another faux pas is when the
image is not properly plumb. You won't find a room in a
luxury magazine with bowed or angled doors or walls.
It's an easy fi x but must always be addressed.
We'll discuss how to stage a room for photography,
become aware of how objects can interfere with each
other and how to avoid over- and underexposed images. And of course I will touch on the technical stuff:
understanding how ISO, aperture and shutter speed
affects our images; how to get maximum depth of field;
what the heck white balance is; lens choices; and other
equipment options.
Kitchen and bathroom remodels rival one another in
popularity and are the most expensive rooms in the home
to renovate - and the similarities don't end there. In this
session, we will share three years of consumer insights
into trends on features, furnishings and motivations
behind today's kitchens and master bathrooms.
Attendees will learn:
a Key consumer trends in kitchen and bathroom
renovations over the past three years
a Differences in preferences and approaches to
kitchen and bath renovations across generations
of homeowners
a Length of kitchen and bath remodel planning and
construction phases and what consumers look for
in professional help
a How homeowners are changing their approach to
these specialized spaces in ways that challenge the
notion of where we live and relax within our homes
These invaluable insights will help attendees optimize
their marketing and project management strategies for
the coming year.

EFFECTS OF COLOR
IN DESIGN

In her session, Kathryn Grube will overview color
as a whole by what it does to the body mentally and
physically. Once the effects are known, the designer can
curtail the mood by what the design intent (function) is
for the space, and she says there is a definite need to select
different colors for different responses from end users.
"In most instances, kitchens should be stimulating
for increasing appetite and conversation and entertaining - a social setting of sorts," says Grube. "Baths are
entirely different as they are a place to restore, rejuvenate,
cleanse and relax - all of which involve soothing colors
to enhance the function."
She advises that clients take out the personal preference of their favorite color and look at the intended
function of the space itself. The intended function will
depict an area of hues that will enhance the design intent.
"Color design is much more than just the aesthetic
outcome, and when used strategically, it can help improve quality of life through promoting wellbeing," said
Grube. "Of course, residential design should be what
we love, so finding that happy medium of function and
aesthetic is the challenge and, ultimately, the goal."
