"Behind the modular cooking units and hood
is a wall that separates the kitchen from the
staircase going up to the private family areas
and bedrooms," said Glass. "Our client realized
that if we left a small gap between the wall and
the rammed earth, it would be the perfect way
to catch a glimpse of who's going up or down
the staircase. She is very spatially aware and
creatively minded."
A cabinet for oils and spices is within arm's
reach of the modular cooking units. Glass said
this was difficult to engineer, but it accomplished a
specific request. A stow-away cabinet below is the
perfect size for the client's toaster oven, a regularly
used appliance.
The house is composed of textured rammed
earth walls, so the designer chose complementary
natural, durable and timeless materials for the
kitchen, including polished concrete floors; black
MDF, stainless steel and white oak veneered cabinetry; and quartz stone slab countertops.
"We assisted the client in developing the pigment combinations for the varying striations
in the rammed earth walls, so we knew what
would work with the base palette of colors," said
Glass. "The quartz countertops were the client's
find - she loved the crystalline structures and
soft subtle tones."

ACCOMMODATING SPACES
According to the designer, one of the goals of the kitchen was
to create clear zones and appropriately scaled spaces, so the
design team designed a scullery to be used as a catering area
and to hide away food and dishes while entertaining.
"With the option to separate the main kitchen and scullery
through a concealed pocket door, the area can be closed off
from view leaving only a pass-through opening perfect for
tidying up for last-minute guests," said Glass. "This area also
features a baking station with a dedicated area for small appliances and an extra- deep preparation counter, along with a
beverage station for wine and coffee."
Instead of including an outdoor living and dining space,
the main kitchen is located close to the outdoors and the
pool. Folding steel frame doors close or open the areas to one
another, and built-in banquet seating in the breakfast area was
incorporated for relaxing or casual dining.
The judges thought this kitchen was stunning and were especially "wowed"by how well it was integrated with the house
and the gorgeous material mix in a subtle color palette.
