A subtle mix of materials provides a backdrop
for entertaining and a wine country view

THE GOAL WITH THIS NAPA VALLEY KITCHEN was to be large enough to
host frequent dinner parties, accommodate multiple cooks and provide an
extensive window to the beautiful views outside.To fulfill the clients' wishes,
Leslie Kalish and Gayle Leksan of LMK Interiors in Lafayette, Calif.,
designed a $140,000 new-build space with an open floor plan and various
dining, prep and entertaining areas.
"I incorporated two sinks in a zone formation to allow for a cleaning zone
and two cook/prep zones," said Kalish, "and a second table can be added to
the main table in the kitchen to give the clients 20 feet of dining space."
The outdoor living area is also accessible to the new kitchen, and raised
bar seating at the island provides a more casual dining/entertaining setting.

TACKLING THE ISSUES

"The biggest challenge was the lack of upper cabinets because of the incorporation of all of the windows displaying the view," said Kalish. "There was
also one long wall where we wanted to install bar cabinetry."
Solutions included:
"Using a tower refrigerator to take up less wall space and allow for more
counter space
"Putting freezer drawers in a portion of the island rather than a wider fridge/
freezer combo along the wall
"Using different heights to differentiate bar and perimeter cabinetry along
the window wall
"Since we used different colors for the cabinets on that wall, if they were all
the same height, the color change would have been too abrupt,"said Leksan.
"Keeping the bar at 36 inches and stepping up both the height of the other
cabinets and countertops makes more sense to the eye."
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

Kalish and her team, which also included Sean Gardunio of JB Turner Kitchens, chose three colors of cabinetry to add depth and texture to the space to
blend with and not steal from the scenery outside.

"We developed a palette so that the space felt
rich, strong and earthy," added Kalish. "There are
many tones and materials used in this space, and
yet it is still peaceful, natural and luxurious."
A table-height fireplace adds to the coziness
of the kitchen, as do the wire-brushed white oak
floors and rustic barnwood pantry door. According to Kalish, steel threads certain elements of the
kitchen together, including details on the hood,
the trestle base of the table, fireplace doors, mesh
on the dining table light and sliding door hardware on the pantry door.
The judges loved this well-designed kitchen
and the incorporation of the workspaces and eating areas, as well as the choice of cabinet colors.
"The mix of materials works well together
and reflect the Napa environment," said one of
the judges, Sheryl Steinberg. "The colors create
a warm yet airy space."

