Eco-friendly kitchen helps
owners decrease their carbon
footprint in a stunning space

way builders label sustainability.This kitchen project is part of one of those highly rated homes and
includes reclaimed, recycled and local materials in
its design to help meet these strict requirements
for green certification.
"As this value becomes more mainstream,
people are acknowledging that to decrease
your footprint, you need to make conscientious
purchases," said project manager, Abbey Maschmedt. "Most of our homebuyers are investing
in solar panels. Every little bit makes a difference,
and we have some of the lowest electric bills in
the country."

Locally made, formaldehyde-free custom cabinets; recycled content subway tile; and 100-yearold reclaimed wood floors provide some of the
sustainable elements of this light-filled kitchen.
The designer specified Energy Star-rated appliances, 100 percent LED lighting and WaterSense-certified plumbing fixtures, which Maschmedt says help this home use 60 percent less
water than typical homes. She chose Caesarstone
countertops, which incorporate a sustainable
manufacturing process.
"We wanted to build a house that was beautiful,
functional and eco-conscious to help bridge the
gap between green homes and interior design,"
said the designer, who explained that sourcing
materials can sometimes be a challenge."We have
high standards we are not willing to sacrifice, so we
put a lot of time and effort into researching and
seeking out the best in our region."
Dwell Development sources its woods from
independent parties in the Pacific Northwest
and establishes long-term relationships with local suppliers. The company also keeps abreast of
the newest eco-friendly products and materials so
its clients can limit water and energy use.
"For this project, we mixed modern accents
with reclaimed woods to create a one-of-a-kindlook,"said Maschmedt."The neutral color palette
pairs beautifully with the reclaimed accents and
creates a timeless design that is sure to age with
the home."

