to be able to envision those improvements before
they are completed," said Carter. "This is even
more important when we're talking about a home
that doesn't have a lot of square footage to spare."

Know your clients' space needs. Do they want
a place in the mudroom where people can sit
and change shoes? How many people will the
laundry room serve? Will either space need to
incorporate a bathing area for a pet? "By having specific places for the specific items, a small
space can be just the ticket," said Dreith.
"
Incorporate function. A mudroom could be as
simple as a coat rack and bench in the home's
entryway. A smaller laundry closet tucked away
behind doors can incorporate a washer/dryer
with a counter above.

"Small decks can almost always be built no
matter the space or budget," said Jason Urrutia, principal of Sausalito, Calif.-based Urrutia
Design."The key is to build something that will
allow you to enjoy the outdoors with a friend, a
good book, your dog, etc., and even better if it is
accessed by oversized French or sliding doors."

Create the illusion of something larger. "Smaller
spaces are a great way to add homeowner personality without conflicting with the style of
the rest of the house," said Alex Hubbard of
Case Design/Remodeling. "Maximize functionality, create lighting to keep it airy, and add
luxurious elements and finishes to give the
space a grandeur feel."
"
Think inside the "cabinet" box. "As designers, we
need to be up to date on the latest storage and cabinetry trends,which allows us to creatively achieve
a lot in a small space," said Atherton. "Working
closely with a good cabinet company allows us to
utilize every available inch if necessary."
Olivia Lord of Boston-based Jewett Farms
+ Co., says her company builds single-face,
frame-inset cabinetry that allows for maximum
storage and can be altered in depth and height
to perfectly fit each space. Her firm also works
with many historic homes where the design
team can use a narrow passageway to create
more storage space for the kitchen area.
"
Everything needs to serve a purpose. Carter
recommends taking advantage of wall space,
ceiling heights and cabinet configuration to
maximize the area and to incorporate items
with a smaller footprint.
"
Achieve bar none. According to Richardson, a
beverage area can operate with a small sink for a
water source and drain, and a pantry-size cabinet
is sufficient for a fully functioning bar.

