A BUSY COUPLE WHO TRAVEL FOR WORK all over the world during the
week wanted a retreat outside of the city to relax and unwind on the weekends. Professionally, they are based in New York City, but they also own a
functional farm on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, Pa. They wanted a modern
kitchen in which they could gather their family and friends and appreciate
the more important things in life.
"In the new kitchen, they can relax, kick back and enjoy the benefits of
living on a working farm and enjoying life's simpler moments,"said designer
Lauren Levant of Lauren Levant Interior. "With many animals and crops
produced right here on the property, the couple enjoys sharing the fruits of
their farm by cooking for those they love."

BEFORE & AFTER

According to Levant, the existing kitchen was cramped and chopped up with
randomly divided spaces that were hard to use. A dividing wall with ductwork
and mechanicals closed in the space ever further.The homeowners tasked the
designer with creating an open floor plan with storage and preservation options for farm-fresh food and a custom wine bar for bottle storage and seating.
"Whether entertaining their own immediate family over the weekend
or having a blow-out holiday party for 200 people or more, this dynamic
duo needed a space that allowed them to fluidly and easily enjoy farm life at

its fullest," said Levant. "The design objectives were fulfilled by opening up
the space, moving the mechanicals and crafting a kitchen and wine bar for
a family of four to enjoy while maintaining the openness to host parties for
dozens of close friends."
To accommodate ample farm food inventory and preparation, the designer
specified large-capacity refrigeration and cooking appliances and created a
variety of storage and preservation solutions for fresh herbs and eggs. The
wine bar and seating, which take up a previously unused area in the former
space, provides a separate entertaining area that is also connected to the
kitchen. Its marble bar features natural steel edges, and the space features
handmade steel shelving and a glass herringbone wall tile that amplifies the
natural light that flows through during the day.
