Touch of Glam

A dated master bath becomes
an Art Deco-inspired retreat

DESIGNER RATI MISHRA'S CLIENTS were busy
professionals longing for a master bathroom in
which to escape, but the size of that potential
getaway was only about 50 square feet. With
the additional challenge of an inefficient layout and outdated products, Mishra had to think
creatively about using both space-saving and
luxurious solutions.

INNOVATIVE IDEAS

Before the renovation, the vanity area was open
to the master bedroom, and a wall separated the
shower/toilet area from the sinks, which made
bathing feel claustrophobic. Mishra, the founder
and principal designer of Pleasanton, Calif.-based
DekoRati Interiors, removed that wall and the
drop-down florescent lighting above the sink and
created a completely open master bath with no
interruptions in the ceiling. By keeping the main
fixtures - including a shower/tub combo and a
single sink vanity - in their original locations, she
planned the optimal layout with the minimum
amount of available space.

When she began planning the layout,the designer wanted to use one large barn
door as a new entry to the master bath, but there was not enough space on the
bedroom side of the wall for this to work. Instead, she decided on a pocket door,
which still gives the bath more interior square footage while allowing for privacy.
DECO DESIGN

Along with a more functional layout, the clients wanted blue to be a dominating element in their new master bath.
"As soon as the clients mentioned the color, I knew what to show them,"said
Mishra,explaining that she was inspired by a particular product she saw at KBIS
2018. "I shared this vanity with them, and they just fell in love with that piece."
This statement vanity - a dark blue, Art Deco-style piece with a geometric
cabinetry pattern, includes an undermount sink for optimum counter space.
Additionally, the furniture-like vanity is open underneath, so it lends a sense of
airiness to the room.
To continue the trapezoidal pattern from the vanity and create drama,
Mishra used 3D tile along the shower wall.This textured tile, along with two
horizontal niches, adds visual depth to the space. The lower niche has white
backing and navy blue around the edges to give it an additional sense of
depth, while the higher niche has a glass interior to let in a little natural light.
The gray and white floor tile with a similar geometric pattern - along with
a blue and white framed, rectangular mirror - adds cohesiveness. Since the
floor tile is also visible under the vanity, the room feels larger than it actually
is. Minimalist brass fixtures and faucets, which echo the vanity hardware, add
the dash of opulence the clients hoped for.
"The contrast of navy blue against the white and the brass details makes this
bath look both bold and glamorous at the same time,"said Mishra, adding that
the simple palette and fixtures keep the design feeling light and open.
