"There is no longer a need to be on the floor
reaching to the back of any cabinet in the kitchen,"
said Pierce. "And even when door cabinets are
used, there is an increased number of roll-out trays
inside to serve the same purpose."
SMART STORAGE

Technology is touching every part of the home -
including storage - because of the positive impact
it can make on a cabinet's functionality.
"Automation or systems geared toward reducing effort have been growing in this industry,"
said a Richelieu representative. "We now have
'hands-free' motion- or sensor-activated systems
allowing the consumer to access cabinet contents
effortlessly, as well as a corner cabinet solution that
will literally lift up the entire contents of a corner
cabinet at the touch of a button."
Push-to-open and soft-close doors are still very
popular for cabinets because of their universal accessibility and ease of use. The next step after this
type of hands-free technology will be voice-activated cabinetry, which could work with smart home
systems like Amazon Alexa or Google Home.
"We live in a world where technology is king
and technology will continue to drive innovations,"said Angela O'Neill, director of advertising
and marketing at Wellborn Cabinet. "More and
more homeowners want easier accessibility."
To give consumers this accessibility, manufacturers are also capitalizing on features like interior lighting. According to a team of designers
at Crown Point Cabinetry, toe-kick lighting and

feature curved, ﬂat-wire
design details that ﬂow across
each organizer. Each comes
in a choice of two ﬁnishes -
polished chrome and black

rather than powdercoated, for
added durability.

LED lights that turn on when a cabinet door is
open make it easier for everyone - regardless of
age and ability - to maneuver a space and find
what they are looking for.
"Before people relied on dreadful, large lights
that only fit under the cabinet and still only covered just sections of the counter," said McPeek.
"Now with LED lighting, consumers can purchase customized fixtures that light the entire
countertop and inside of the cabinet."
Along with interior lighting are interior electrical outlets, making it easy to plug in and store
items like hair dryers or razors in the bathroom or
phone chargers in the kitchen.This again provides
a better "home" for these items and elimi- â
nates having messy cords in view.
