"There's definitely an overall rise in discussion
and interest in biophilic design," she added. "I
think we are all trying to come back to nature and
connect to it, and biophilic design is a great way to
bring this to human-made spaces that are lacking
connectivity to the natural environment."
Rosenfield also uses plants in her designs to
cleanse toxins from the air and boost positive
feelings. She suggests arranging seating toward
views of nature to de-stress and inspire a feeling of
calmness. Mueller feels that natural light improves
one's well-being and can relieve depression and
seasonal affective disorder.
"Circadian or human-centric lighting mimics
sunlight's warm color in the mornings and evenings and cool tones in midday to keep our sleepawake cycle on track," she added. "That cycle or
circadian rhythm is often disturbed by all-day
exposure to artificial lighting in commercial and
institutional environments."
According to The Lighting Practice, a lighting design firm based in Philadelphia and New
York City, circadian lighting is the concept that
electric light can be used to support human health
by minimizing the effect of electric light on the
human circadian rhythm.
"Biophilic design is a great way to bring healthy
air into our living spaces," said Umali. "It also
brings natural materials, light and views of nature - which are important to our well-being and
help us relax and destress our mind and spirit."
THINKING SMART

Technology and connectivity also play a huge part
in the wellness movement. Security systems help
with peace of mind, and voice- and/or motioncontrolled faucets are water efficient and easy to
use. Smart thermostats allow the user to control
the temperature from any room in the house and
outside of the house, and there are sensors that can
detect leaks, high temperatures or pollutants in the
air and warn the homeowner.
"Upcoming technology for refrigeration will be
able to track inventory expiration dates and will
teach you how to cook with items that are about
to expire," said Kennedy, who recently attended
CEDIA Expo, an event that all-encompasses
smart home technology.
Being able to control everything from lighting
to blinds to shower controls from an app on your
smart device or with your voice is efficient for
everyone, including those with limited mobility.
"In this current barrage of technology, negativity and uncertainty created by the events of
the world around us, we are all seeking escape,"
said Clegg. "That old adage of 'it's not how you
look, it's how you feel,' can be applied to interiors
as well."

