The clean and modern vanity was inspired by
the one in Solomon's powder room. Its simple
design provides some deep drawers and a horizontal shelf for towels to carry on the hotel vibe.
She used a former closet in the master bath for
the new commode room, and the previous one
became the shower.
BALANCING THE BUDGET
Although the designer didn't want to go above her
budget of $30,000, which is already a high price
for a master bath in her first-time homebuyer
neighborhood, she admitted the project ended
up being more expensive because of the tile alone.
"I didn't want to skimp on materials, but all
those little details add up," she said.
Solomon's cabinet maker gave her a few breaks
because of their longstanding relationship, and
the toilet and sink were donated through a brand
collaboration. She also bartered with some of the
vendors for better pricing and bought the tub
from Build.com.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
According to the designer, the original contractor she hired was not as experienced with installing a curbless unit on the second floor. After she
researched the requirements of this hurdle, the
new contractor solved the issue by cutting into
the floor joist to lower the shower pan so it could
drain properly.
Another challenge Solomon had to literally live
with was staying at the house during the delayed
construction of the master bath. Even through the
temporary plastic walls, dust coated the nearby
spaces, including her bedroom.
"The project took weeks longer than it was supposed to, mostly because the thin porcelain slabs
on the walls kept breaking,"said the designer, who
explained that this postponed work being done by
the carpenter and the plumber."Once one thing is
delayed, it throws everything else off."
As some of the products in Solomon's bathroom were donated by vendors, she had some
obligations to them, including a time frame for
sharing photos of the finished project.
As far as project highlights, the designer remembers seeing the floor tile being applied, as
well as the different elements coming together,
and knew it was all worth it in the end. Getting to
finally use it was the cherry on top.
"As a designer working on my own home,
I develop one room at a time and each has its
own vibe," explained Solomon. "I know we are
exposed to a lot of choices, but I always know
exactly what I want."
