Drysdale selected a Shaker-style door from
the cabinets offered by the builder. A gray-andsilver mosaic tile and darker grout were used for
the backsplash, and a decorative painter was
brought on to stripe the walls in gray shades
derived from the Sherwin-Williams cabinet
color. The monochromatic palette looks luxurious and sophisticated.
"We were all bored with white kitchens and
rejected wood stained as well,"explained Drysdale.
"We thought that the gray color with matching
countertops would feel more residential and elegant enough to see from the art-filled foyer."
FUNCTIONAL FEATURES

To ensure the clean space stays that way, Drysdale
incorporated elements that combine attractiveness with functionality. The island drawers have
chargers inside, as well as storage for iPads and
laptops. Cabinetry adjacent to the second island
houses a TV, which can be easily concealed by
closing the cabinet doors.
Another hidden gem came from the homeowners' request for wine storage. Because there
was not enough space in the kitchen to accommodate it, Drysdale created a wine room in what had
been a closet. The entry door to the rectangular
closet sits at the middle of one of the long sides.
She maintained the short sides as coat storage
behind internal lacquered doors. But the long
side - what is visible upon opening the door - is
dedicated to wine storage.
Although Drysdale removed the door that
had closed off the kitchen, she added two shorter
doors to accommodate the couple's dogs. These
42-in.-high doors meet in the middle of the foyer
to keep the dogs secure in the kitchen and retract
out of sight when not in use. From the kitchen, the
dogs can also access the balcony with their special
"green" area when nature calls.

OUTDOOR LIVING

The dogs are not the only ones who benefit from outdoor spaces. The
penthouse has multiple options for an al fresco lifestyle. Off the kitchen
is a small balcony, which has been styled as a café area; it has a table and
two chairs. The master bedroom also has an outdoor balcony, and there is
a planting area near the front door. A sizeable patio, accessed through the
living room, offers enough space for a lounge area complete with a cabana,
a grill and a firepit.
"The plan of the patio as laid out by Toll Brothers [the builders] naturally
seemed to fit those functions," said Drysdale. "My clients had seen the stunning cabana when they strolled into Janus et Cie.That piece provides shaded
seating and importantly softens the strong backdrop of all the new construction in this rapidly growing area."

