A YOUNG FAMILY IN CALIFORNIA wanted to make some updates to their
home. With a busy schedule and parents who visit often, they needed a
functional guest bath for them to use when they come over.
The already small space was even tighter with a bulky tub/shower combo
and a large toilet. Designer Rati Mishra of Pleasanton, Calif.-based Dekorati
Interiors was in charge of fulfilling the clients' wishes of a modern-looking
guest retreat in little square footage.

CREATING THE ILLUSION OF SPACE

Mishra started by tearing out the shower and tub and instead decided on a
shower only and replaced the cumbersome brown vanity with a white floating
unit. She was able to use the whole wall for the new vanity when she removed
a small closet right inside the entry.The sizable toilet was replaced by a wallhung version, which the clients were unsure of at first.

unit,"said the designer."I walked them through the
function of doing this through the small wall panel."
A 36-in.-tall lighted mirror above the 48-in.wide floating vanity wall creates an open feeling
in the bathroom. Mishra chose the largest size
she could find to provide additional storage in
the tight space, which was also the goal of the
recessed linen cabinet next to the vanity. She
replaced the swing door with a pocket version,
which she said was more expensive to install, but
the swing door was making an already tight hallway look even smaller.
The color and material palette also played a role
in making the guest bath feel bigger and brighter.
The metallic field tile used as an accent wall in the
shower is balanced by the linen-textured feel of
the surrounding wall tiles. The same metallic tile
was used as a backsplash behind the vanity for a
continuous flow in the bathroom.
"To complement the neutrals in the walls, I
chose porcelain tile in soft greens in a contemporary cross-weave pattern for the shower floor,
as well as the overall floor tile," said Mishra.
Although it raised some eyebrows at first, the
European-style, wall-hung toilet is the standout
feature of the bath for the parents and the homeowners' two children. They love the soft-close,
auto-cleansing and seat-warming features, and
the unit is at a universal height for everyone to
comfortably access.

