ORETHAN EVERTODAY, homeowners are looking
for spaces in their homes - particularly master
bathrooms - to serve as retreats. This particular
project, which was more problematic than relaxing, came to Amy Leferink, who was charged with
completely revisioning the space with a serene and
practical design.
"Our clients' only requirements were to update the look and improve the functionality," said
Leferink, who is the founder and principal owner
of Minneapolis-based Interior Impressions."Our
goals though were to bring in a very relaxing, spalike feel, brighten up the space and provide all the
modern comforts we could think of for a luxurious bath."
STARTING WITH A BLANK SLATE
There were several problems with the original
design.The bathroom was dark because the main
window shades were difficult to reach and were
never opened; the homeowners would have to
climb into the tub to reach them. The shower
sported a bulky glass-block wall that dated the
space and took up unnecessary room. Other dysfunctional attributes included old and inefficient
showerheads, minimal counterspace and poor
lighting in general.
Leferink and the homeowners decided it would
be best to tear everything out of the bathroom and
start from scratch - but it was the homeowners
who offered to do the demo themselves.
"Our clients had done some remodeling work
in the past and were pretty knowledgeable about
what needed to be done," said the designer, explaining that while this was a lot more work than
the clients anticipated, it saved money on the cost
of labor and freed up the budget for the more luxurious items they wanted like heated floors and
marble tile in the shower.
The team then used Revit software for cabinetry
design and space planning, as well as InDesign for
mood boards and their selection presentation. In
the new design, the layout remained essentially the
same, which saved money on plumbing costs.The
team instead thoughtfully selected products and
used updated design methods to make the square
footage available more functional and spa-like.

Splurges for this project
included the marble tile in the
shower, the brass lighting and
custom-designed cabinetry, as
well as rounded edge detailing
in the shower. The plumbing
fixtures and the bathtub were
reasonably priced to help save
on the budget.
