Stylish Starter Home
DESIGNER KRISTINE TYLER TAKES BUDGETS SERIOUSLY. In fact, one of
the first conversations she has with potential clients is about their budget. It
happens before they hire her and maybe even before they meet her. A case
in point is the kitchen remodel she completed for a young couple, who had
just $35,000 to spend and wanted to move a sliding-glass door as part of
the project.
Before taking the job,Tyler, owner of Tree Frog Design in Clinton, Wash.,
learned about the clients' goals and lifestyle. The kitchen was in their starter
home, and the couple expected to move within five years. Because they were
in their 20s, they had not built up a massive collection of small appliances or
dishware, nor had they developed any mobility issues, so special drawers and
pull-out storage did not need to be on the menu. After looking up their house
online to find its approximate value and learning that the appliances were new,
the designer determined that she could give them the clean, contemporary
kitchen they desired and still stay within their slim budget.

A BUDGET-FIRST MINDSET

" I try to be very mindful of people's budgets, " said
Tyler, who charges a flat fee for her projects. " It's
the most important conversation because I have
to know if I'm talking to somebody who has a
realistic grasp on their budget. That is a difficult
conversation to have because it involves money,
but I try to put people's feelings at ease. "
She would rather have a potential client not hire
her than do so and be unhappy when the project
exceeds the expected cost or does not meet the
client's goals.
" Nobody wants to be in the position of finding
out we've put all this planning into effect, and 
we can't do it, " she added.
