Tourism

In search of new arrivals
Honduras is looking to give a boost to tourism - a core part of the country's growth
plan - through public-private partnerships

than $10 billion to the overall
economy in five years.
COHEP's Larach says,
however, the government
must continue to work to
improve Honduras' image,
particularly by reducing
crime levels, a concern for
investors.
Crime on the resort
island of Roatán is lower
than on the mainland, yet
security is a major concern
nationally, including the
capital, Tegucigalpa. Business
leaders say this needs to
be addressed if the country
wants to receive more
tourists.
Limited tourism
infrastructure has hampered
development, but the
government is actively
attempting to reverse this
through public-private partnerships, a
World Bank report released in March
noted.

Honduras has hundreds of miles of white
sand beaches, majestic pre-Hispanic
Mayan ruins and picturesque colonial
cities. However, it lags behind its neighbors
in tourism arrivals and faces increased
competition from other Caribbean
destinations, especially emerging player
Cuba.
Far from being discouraged, government
and business leaders see this as an
opportunity for the nation.
"We have tremendous room for growth
in tourism," says Luis Larach, president
of the Honduran Council of Private
Companies (COHEP). "I would say that
we have not tapped even 20% of our
potential."
World Bank statistics show that there
is much to be done. Honduras received
868,000 tourists in 2014. This figure does
not include cruise ship arrivals, but remains
well below neighboring Central American
countries with the exception of Belize.
The regional leader is Costa Rica, with
2.52 million tourists in 2014. Closest to
Honduras on the high end is Nicaragua,
with 1.3 million tourists that year, while
Belize had 321,000 arrivals.
In a 2015 report on Honduras, the
World Travel and Tourism Council stated
that the total impact of tourism on the
Honduran economy was $3.09 billion.
It estimated that this would increase to
$5.63 billion by 2025. Capital investment
is forecast to increase from $435 million in
2014 to $935 million in 2025.

and has identified it as a central pillar in
its Honduras 20/20 Plan, which aims to
create 600,000 new jobs and attract more

In its 20/20 growth plan, Honduras wants
to generate at least $850 million in new
investment and 255,000 new jobs in
tourism by the end of the decade.
It will start by promoting its Caribbean
beaches, the best known of which are
located on Roatán and the other Bay
Islands off the country's Atlantic coast.
