ith Colombia becoming a full-fledged investment-grade sovereign this year, the country’s corporates are increasingly looking outside their borders for acquisitions and financing as they aggressively expand within Latin America and beyond. The country’s new blue-chip status and increased investor interest in the Andean nation means lower funding costs for its corporates, even those that have already broken the triple B barrier. Recent market volatility notwithstanding, the country’s borrowers are spoilt for choice, and can now access international bond markets, equity, loans and the local markets both in Colombia and in other parts of Latin America. “[The investment-grade] has been great news,” says Andres Bernal Correa, vice president of investment and finance at Colombian conglomerate Grupo de Inversiones Suramericana (GrupoSura). “It allows the country and companies to go to market at a lower cost and makes us more competitive and profitable.” GrupoSura has been plotting an up to $2.1 billion equity follow-on in the local and international markets to help it cover the cost of the recently agreed €2.615 billion ($3.76 billion) acquisition of ING’s LatAm pension fund and insurance assets. It selected BBVA, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, JPMorgan, Santander and UBS to lead the deal after those institutions extended a $1.65 billion bridge loan. The sharp selloff in the broader stock market could complicate matters for GrupoSura, but a bond issue may not be a better alternative given the pressures rating agencies are exerting on the
