"Villa Bella Grotto"
Funded by MacGillivray
Art in Public Places

This pique assiette, or prickly seat
grotto-like seating area, is composed
of cement imbedded with bits of broken pottery and glass collected from
local residents and beaches. The
concept for the Villa Bella Grotto emerged directly from the dictates of the
site and the idea of how public art is accessed, created and experienced,
Leah said. "I wanted this piece to be a gentle reminder of handcrafted and
slower times; something that will be discovered while sitting, walking, taking
a closer look, while at the same time being able to throw out a sparkle that
one captures in the corner of one's eye while driving past at night, attracting
the romance in all of us," the artist explained.

"Pearl"

Funded by Bowers Perez Associates
Art in Public Places

In describing his work Dan Skaggs said,
"Pearl is a term surfers would use to describe the wave that breaks off the rocks
at the beach at the end of this street. The
sculpture was inspired by the large rock
sitting in the sand at this beach and the
waves breaking on it at high tide."

"Mozambique"

Funded by Mozambique Restaurant LLC
Art in Public Places

This mosaic was designed to
depict the galleons of the early
Portuguese explorers as they
sailed off the coast of Africa in
search of spices. The mosaic
technique used by this artist dates
back to Roman times 2,000 year
ago. Each glass tile, the size of a
thumbnail, is precisely placed to
create the larger image.

Jorg Dubin 2002
"Viking Studio"
Funded by Laguna Shores LLC
Art in Public Places

Jorg Dubin, a Laguna Beach artist, was influenced by the historical significance of the
site, the original home and studio of artist
Frank Cuprien, who called his space the
"Viking Studio." The sculpture is a stylized
construction based on an ancient Viking
ship. The remains of the once great ship
are made of wood, copper and bronze.
