2019 Q4 Iowa Spirits - 19
Iowa Legendary Rye Aged Whiskey will
make a gift of distinction for anyone on your list.
And perhaps your parents will be the folks
footing the bill for the family's holiday feast, so
help them out with a case of wine-half white,
half red-made in Iowa.
Lindon Wines began in 2006 when Burlington
doctors Don McCabe and Mike AbouAssaly partnered to utilize McCabe's test-planted vines
including French-American hybrids known to be
hardy in southeast Iowa. The goal was to raise
grapes resistant to local pathogens and thus
subjected to the least amount of spraying.
Lindon now markets a variety of wines including Burlington Blush, a crisp, slightly citrus wine
with apricot and peach notes made from
Frontenac Gris grapes; Burlington Mist from
Seyval Blanc grapes that give it hints of grapefruit
and lemon, and Frontenac Dry, a hearty red with
black cherry notes.
For the beer aficionado(s) on your list, a few
to investigate are Que Sera Sour Ale, a light
wheat ale from Big Grove in Iowa City; Tip the
Cow Cocoa Espresso Milk Stout from
Singlespeed Brewing in Waterloo, and one of
Iowa's oldest, Millstream Brewing in Amana,
which opened in 1985, the first brewery in
Amana since 1884. They offer nearly 20 brews
including an Iowa pale ale, German pilsener and
the finely-named Back Road Stout.
For those who don't imbibe, there are plenty
of other items in liquor stores that will serve you
well:
* Team koozies with logos for the Iowa
Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones, UNI Panthers,
plus the Broncos, Vikings, Cubs and Cardinals.
Green Bay and KC! The Steelers? That's pushing
things a bit too far in the Land of the Hawk.
* Jumbo Chilling Stones by Rabbit. Basically,
these are stainless steel cubes that replace ice
and thus don't dilute your drink, plus they're a
very James Bondish type of cool. You could, however, just freeze some chromed lug nuts and toss
them into your vodka tonic.
* The Crushed Ice Mold from Rabbit is a silicon grid of 286 tiny squares that, when flexed,
dumps out 286 perfect little tiny ice cubes.
Keep in mind that the speed at which ice melts
is related to its surface area, so the cubes created
with this device are going to melt much faster
than typical hand-pounded ice.
Cheers!
