The Farm at Glen Haven
Love, Music, Hops and the River
Fifty-acre Farm at Glen Haven has a storied
history. It was the home of Alleghany iron
magnate John Jordan, who, with his partner
John Irvine, built the first hot blast furnace
in the South, naming it after their wives. The
Lucy Selina Furnace produced Alleghany iron
that was shipped all over the world.
Glen Haven was Col. Jordan's farm,
bordered by the Cowpasture River with
breathtaking views of the surrounding
mountains. Today, it has new life as a
wedding and event venue, a regional concert
site-and, once again, a working farm, with
the first major harvest of organic hops due
in 2020.
Michelle Hawse Rucker grew up at Glen
Haven and returned with her husband and
child to re-envision life on the farm. "I've
always loved planning events," she says,
sitting in the beautifully renovated, "rustic
chic" Glen Haven barn. With its Edison lights,
restrooms, dressing rooms and bar, the Barn
has been the site of many weddings, proms
and reunions. "We can dress it up, or dress
it down," Rucker says and calls Glen Haven
Farm "a fairy tale location." She's not far off
the mark. *
