Green Pastures at Longdale
Walks through History
Off Route 60 East, in the George
Washington National Forest's Longdale
Recreation Area, an inquisitive visitor will
come upon a small, still lake mirroring the
surrounding mountains. The sand beach is
grown up, but the 1930s picnic shelter and
bathhouses still stand.
This is Green Pastures, one of four
National Forest Recreation areas across

America planned for African-Americans in
the Jim Crow era, and, historians believe, the
only one actually completed.
Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps
in 1938 at the request of the Clifton Forge
Chapter of the NAACP, Green Pastures
drew busloads of visitors from all over
Virginia. Listed in 2018 on the list of Most
Endangered Historic Sites in Virginia, the
park is currently under review to be added to
the National Register of Historic Places.
