participate in VEX Robotics Competitions
against other schools from across the region
and the state.
These innovative classrooms, however,
have not taken away the focus from one
of education's most important core values:
literacy.
With the support of The Alleghany
Foundation, both Covington City and
Alleghany County Public Schools have
entered into a Partnership in Literacy with
the University of Virginia's Curry School to

conduct Move AHEAD in Literacy. This is a
pilot program of the Virginia Department
of Education designed to analyze data
and trends in literacy in the Alleghany
Highlands so local educators are armed with
the knowledge they need to ensure a lifetime
love of reading in every life they touch.
As if these opportunities weren't enough
for young scholars, Dabney S. Lancaster
Community College in Clifton Forge has an
extensive dual enrollment program open to
high school students in the college's service

area. While Alleghany High School has an
Early College Scholars program dedicated
to dual enrollment, in recent years both
Alleghany and Covington High Schools have
seen students be awarded the prestigious
Governor's Medallion for obtaining an
associate's degree at the same time they earn
their high school diplomas.
While DSLCC offers a wide variety of
associate degree programs, the college is
finding new success through the America's
Promise Grant. The program, driven by the
U.S. Department of Labor, has one simple
goal: to see its students leave the program
with a higher wage than they had when they
entered by earning industry recognized
workforce credentials in addition to
academic degrees.
A focus on workplace readiness doesn't
only exist at the college level. Jackson River
Technical Center, in Low Moor, is jointly
operated by both local school systems and
provides an invaluable education for those
looking to enter the workforce after high
school.
