Alleghany County is home to the Jackson
River Scenic Trail, a 14.4-mile trail perfect
for hiking, biking and jogging. Managed by
Alleghany County Parks and Recreation, the
first trailhead is located only minutes from
downtown Covington with three more and a
proposed fourth throughout the trail, which
puts the beauty of the great outdoors at
your convenience. The trail is home to the
annual Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon,
Half Marathon, 10K & 5K in June where the
full marathon is a qualifier for the Boston
Marathon! The race draws tourists from
dozens of states and countries each year.
If rain or snow conspires to keep you off
the trail, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA in
Low Moor has more than enough options to
keep you busy. The YMCA offers organized
classes in yoga, Zumba, strength training,
toning, Tai Chi, core and flexibility training,
all taught by exceptional instructors at the
top of their fields. Trainers are available
in the cardio and weight room, or you can
hit the pool, where aqua aerobic classes are
provided free of charge with a membership to
the YMCA. The family-oriented facility offers

half-day and all-day preschool options for
children from 30 months to 4 years of age, as
well as enrichment programs for school-age
children and a highly competitive swim team,
The YMCA Dolphins, for children between
the ages of 5 and 18.
