f all beverages, wine is most dependent
upon place. While the ingredients for beer
and spirits are typically shipped to the breweries and distilleries, wineries often grow their own
grapes on site. Like all plants, the fruit of the vine is
influenced by where it's grown-and in Idaho, conditions are sublime.
The land, the climate and the cost of living have all
contributed to the growth of Idaho's wine industry,
which now boasts more than 50 wineries. The land
provides rich, well-draining soil, made from ancient
volcanic and lake-bottom sediment, plus a generous
water supply. The climate gives grape growers cold
winters (so vines can rest and so pests and diseases
can fade away) and warm, dry summers with cold
nights (to balance acids and sugars and keep mold and
rot at bay). And because property hasn't been priced
out of the market, as in well-known wine regions like
those in California, Idaho's wine industry is attracting
money and top-notch talent.
Heartwarming stories weave their way through
Idaho wineries, too, with plenty of family-owned
endeavors paying dividends in success, memories and
tales of toil and love. Idahoans can also take pride in
the many women involved in making the industry
successful, including owners and winemakers.
Idaho Wine Month in June offers the perfect
excuse to visit the wineries and be a part of the special
events and festivals that celebrate the fruit of the vine.
Then continue celebrating the beauty, enjoyment and
tasty relaxation of the state's wineries during the other
eleven months of the year, too!
