HERE ARE A LOT OF PERKS out there for

people at or near retirement, but few of them
are better than the Virginia State Council of Higher
Education program of free college for those older than
60.
A few caveats go along with the program-requiring
an income not over $15,000 or $23,850 a year for fulltime students, (depending on how your register)-but
if you simply want to go as a part-time, non-credit
student, "Virginians age 60 and older, regardless of
income, may register for and audit courses in any

Virginia institution of higher education," says the SCHE.
"Students may have to pay for course materials and

It's all pretty clear. Clear enough for Wayne St. Clair.
The retired chef had to face the fact that his
philosophy class at Virginia Western Community
College was "far more difficult than I anticipated it
would be," but he soldiers on. He is a 62-year-old
student and one of the thousands of people in Virginia
older than 60 who go to college for free.
