says, "Radford offers audit options ... such as tuition
assistance for qualifying seniors over the age of 60."
Other state schools at the Higher Ed center include VCU,
Dabney Lancaster Community College, James Madison,
Old Dominion, University of Virginia and VWCC.
Josh Meyer, who heads the PR team at Virginia
Western says, "The majority of senior citizens we have
take classes in the School of Liberal Arts and Social
Sciences. We have a lot who take fine arts classes, as
well as many who take a foreign language."
French teacher Sarah Chitwood says "having seniors
in my class creates a great classroom dynamic. The
younger students are often surprised (and a bit timid)
when they walk in on the first day of class and see
seniors in the classroom, but a wonderful sense of
community develops over the course of the semester.
The seniors encourage the efforts of the younger
students and celebrate their successes, and then the

younger students begin to do the same for the seniors.
In the end, everyone learns more than just course
content."
The state's significant perk is not the only-by a long
shot-opportunity to continue education for older
people in the region. Tech, for example, has a Lifelong
Learning Institute; Roanoke College, a private liberal
arts college in Salem, has its ElderscholarSM, which
was developed in the fall of 1984 as a spin-off of the
national Elderhostel program. Elderscholar is primarily
a lecture series.
Friendship Living in Roanoke features a Civil War
roundtable and World War II roundtable each month
and the programs are both scholarly and free.
Libraries in the region offer programs ranging
through cooking, exercise classes, horticulture,
book clubs, crafts, trips and on and on. Each of
those libraries has a website that will give you more
information.
