volunteer training. The Master Gardner program is
especially popular among older people. Following
about 50 hours of training, the gardeners "work within
their local communities to encourage and promote
environmentally sound horticulture practices through
sustainable landscape management education and
training." The program is run by Virginia Tech and
graduates return 50 hours of community service
through a local extension office.
Roanoke's Tree Stewards program is another outlet for
those who love the outdoors. According to its website
(roanoketreestewards.org), "volunteers complete 26
hours of classroom and field training, learning how to
plant trees, prune trees and educate the community
about tree planting and tree care." It is a free course,
beginning in January, and graduates give 30 hours the
first year and 20 hours each additional year to their
