as Julia would, " Everything
in moderation ... including
moderation. "

the renowned chef to say, " The
best thing about a reverse martini
is that you can have two of them. "
Other popular back-in-theday drinks that are worth reembracing:
The Harvey Wallbanger is a
modern classic cocktail that
is basically a Screwdriver with
Galliano, an Italian liqueur. It was
reportedly born in California in
the 1950s, though it didn't become
popular until the early '70s.

Fill a highball glass with ice, then
add the vodka and orange juice.
Stir. Float the Galliano on top.
Garnish with the orange slice and
maraschino cherry, skewered.

The origins of the Rusty Nail
drink are shrouded in mystery-it
may have appeared as early as
1937. But it reached its height of
popularity in the 1960s, perhaps
because Frank Sinatra and the
Rat Pack professed an affinity
for it. The formula calls for 2

parts Scotch to 1 part Drambuie,
a Scotch liqueur infused with a
secret blend of heather honey,
herbs and spices. Use bourbon
instead of Scotch to make a Rusty
Spike.
Before the Salty Dog came
the Greyhound. Both combine
grapefruit juice and gin or vodka.
The salty version, served with
a salted rim, made the bitter
grapefruit more palatable. First
evidence of a Salty Dog comes
from the 1920s with gin. Artie,
Rip Torn's character on " The Larry
Sanders Show " (1992-1998), favored
the drink. Torn later told TV critic
Roger Ebert, " Salty Dog-that was
a drink my dad took. "

Stir the liquor and grapefruit

slice. For a contemporary twist,
muddle rosemary, mint or basil
in the mixing glass with a splash
of simple syrup before blending
the liquor and juice.

The Grasshopper is named for
its bright green color-not for
any kinship in flavor. The 1918
sweet after-dinner New Orleans
creation was especially popular in
the South in the 1950s and '60s.
Joan Wilder (played by Kathleen
Turner) in the 1984 movie,
" Romancing the Stone, " was a
Grasshopper fan.
Variations include the Flying
Grasshopper (use vodka in place
of cream), After Eight (top with a
layer of dark chocolate liqueur),

THE DRINKS OF THE STARS
Then, as now, screenwriters
used alcohol to make statements
about characters and about
the times. Cocktails that made
appearances on TV and the big
screen reflected the culture and
affected the audience. As sponsors
know, product placements boost
awareness and influence behavior.
Like increasing sales of chess
sets after " The Queen's Gambit, "
drinks quaffed by the stars led to
increasing orders at bars.
" Casablanca, " 1942. In this
classic film, Humphrey Bogart's
character, Rick, rarely drinks.
After all, he's the proprietor
of Rick's Café Americain. But
when Yvonne, his spurned love,
shows up with a Nazi flame on
her arm, he orders a French 75,
a Champagne cocktail with gin,
lemon juice and simple syrup.
" All About Eve, " 1950. Aging
Broadway star Margo Channing
(Bette Davis) becomes increasingly
suspicious of her personal
assistant, young Eve Harrington
(Anne Baxter), but Margo's
friends assure her the young
woman is simply being helpful.
At a birthday party for her fiancé,
