Whiskey Ginger, Margarita,
Vodka Tonic, Moscow Mule,
Kamikaze, Gin Fizz, Gin and

* Simple syrup: Use store
bought or DIY. To make
it yourself, mix equal
amounts of sugar and
water, heat till the sugar
dissolves, then cool (store
in the refrigerator). Honey
syrup is showing up in
more drinks these days,
too-use the same 50/50
recipe and instructions.
* Sodas: These canned or
bottled ingredients store
indefinitely, making them
easy additions to your
home bar.
Soda water, aka club soda,
is carbonated, with small
amounts of sodium added
to enhance flavors and
cut bitterness. You'll find
it topping a diversity of
cocktails, such as a Vodka
Soda, Americano, Paloma
or Gin Rickey.
Tonic water, also
carbonated, has been
infused with quinine,
sweetener, and other
flavorings. Besides the
obvious Gin & Tonic and
Vodka Tonic, you can add it
to tequila, amaro, dark rum
or a flavored vodka.
Introducing
Ginger beer provides the
base for a whole team of
Mules. All use ginger beer,
but the spirit changes,
plus other small tweaks:
the classic Moscow Mule
uses vodka; Mexican
Mule substitutes tequila;
Kentucky Mule uses
bourbon; Dark & Stormy
includes rum; and Gin-Gin
Mule uses, yes, gin.
Cola: Coke, Pepsi or a craft
cola. What's easier than
a Rum & Coke (aka Cuba
Libre) or a Jack and Coke?
Lemon-lime soda makes an
appearance in cocktails
such as Pimm's Cup,
Lynchburg Lemonade and
Blue Lagoon.
Virginia ABC carries club
soda, tonic water and
ginger beer. Pick up colas
and other sodas at your
local grocery store.
* Sugar cubes. This simple
ingredient is important
to classic cocktails such
as an Old Fashioned, the
champagne-based French
75 and a Sazerac.
* Lemons and limes. Used
for garnishes and for freshsqueezed
juices in classics
such as a Margarita, French
75 and Sidecar as well as
Whiskey Sour and other
delicious sour cocktails. As
an alternative, purchase
quality pre-squeezed juices.
