* No bubbly or sparkly:
" I don't mix up anything with
carbonated mixers that will go
flat by the end of the evening. " If
you want to use a recipe that calls
for a splash of tonic water, ginger
beer, cola, sparkling wine, etc.,
set the bubbly beside the pitcher
for guests to splash their own.
* Find your favorites: " I'm a
huge fan of Belle Isle moonshine. "
Given her West Virginia roots,
Susan has experienced " white
lightning ... jugs of clear liquor
... that smells like straight-up
rubbing alcohol! " However,
she clarifies, " The Belle Isle
moonshines are delicious-blood
orange, grapefruit ... It's super
simple to mix the Belle Isle
Grapefruit with grapefruit juice.
That's kind of a go-to for me-
just a couple ingredients. "
Her favorite batch cocktails
include Margaritas (using
prepared mixers), Mai Tais, Rum
Punch (coconut rum mixed with
orange, pineapple and cranberry
juices) and Blood Orange
Lemonade (Belle Isle Blood
Orange Moonshine, lemonade
and lemon juice).
* Be flexible: " One time I
was mixing up Blood Orange
Lemonade but we had run out
of lemon juice, so we mixed in
limoncello. Oh, wow, that was
really good! "
* Keep it simple: " I don't have
any super fancy recipes. I'm a big
fan of just keep it simple. "
And a few more batch recipe
tips:
* Unless you have a slushie
machine, blender drinks are out.
* Choose cup sizes according
to each drink's alcohol content.
Fill 18-ounce cups with Zombies
or Long Island Iced Teas and the
party will go south rather quickly!
* On the other hand, you may
want to avoid alcohol-heavy drinks,
especially if guests are driving.
* Add ice or reusable " ice cubes "
at serving time rather than in
advance, to avoid diluting the
drink. Or set an ice bucket or
cooler beside the chilled pitcher
SANGRIAS
We can thank the Spanish for
their classic concoction of red
wine and fruit, a perfect pitcher
drink. Modern sangrias use white
wine as well as red and brandy
or other liquors for taste and
kick (and occasionally lemonlime
soda or other bubblies and
sweeteners).
For a foolproof sangria, start
with a basic recipe. Experiment
with measurements and
