As if the arrival of the fall
season in Virginia with its cooler
temperatures isn't reason
enough to celebrate, this time
of the year also comes with a
holiday around every corner.

In this expanded issue of Spirited
Virginia you'll find more than 50 cocktail recipes to help you navigate your way
from National Vodka Day on October 4 all the way to New Year's 2020.
Our Spooky Spirits article delivers nearly a dozen haunting recipes for cocktails
that sound scary but taste delicious. Covering most spirit categories, there's a
concoction for every palate whether you prefer whiskey, spiced rum, tequila or a
combination of several (see our recipe for the Bonecrusher on page 27).
While most think of Thanksgiving and football games as we move into November,
my favorite event is always the Montpelier Steeplechase. I have long hosted a
gathering of friends and family at this amazing event in Orange County, and no
tailgate would be complete without a special batch of holiday cheer. Check out
our 10 drink recipes for the holiday season beginning on page 28.
When December arrives, my preferred spot is by the fireplace with friends-and
it's the perfect time of the year for exchanging gifts that include some of Virginia
ABC's finer spirits. In this issue we take a look at Cognacs (page 9), and a related
article entitled Sophisticated Scotches (page 16) offers an overview of more than
a dozen of these premium products. If someone you know is lucky enough to be
gifted one of these spirits, then you most certainly should pop by for a drink!
For the host or hostess in search of new ideas for planning a festive get-together
our article on page 32 provides suggestions that just might be the start of a new
tradition. Wherever and however you choose to celebrate, surround yourself with
the friends and family you love.
