T

hough she is new to Virginia ABC, Endia
Tyler dove in headfirst. She started as a
sales associate at Store #308 in Richmond
earlier this year-"right before the whole
coronavirus crisis," she recalls. And soon after
she began working, her store became the first
Virginia ABC store to test a pilot point-of-sale
system, and she was the first associate to use it.
What were your early impressions of your
new job?
It's been very, very, very fun. We make jokes,
and we try to keep everyone as lively as we
can, especially with the place this world is
in right now. My first week here I was back
on the computer, and I hardly saw anybody.
But after about two weeks of training, I was
moved onto floor, and I met some very colorful
characters. It's always a new story: you hear
about someone's family, or helping celebrate
a birthday for someone just turning 21.
What are your responsibilities?
As a sales associate, my job is to work the
register, process the transactions. I also stock
shelves and keep them neat, for the store's
overall visual. And then, of course, to be lively
and educate our customers on all of our ABC
products, on what's good and better and best.
Did you know much about liquor before you
began working with Virginia ABC?
I knew about vodka, rum, brandy and gin,
and maybe three of each of those. I didn't
know anything else. I was pretty clueless.

But I did my own research when it came to
certain liquors, so I could give an accurate
description to customers.
Tell us about the new POS system at your
store.
We were the first store to test-pilot the new
POS-point of sale -system. It's like a standard
cash register, but in the form of a computer, so
everything is very technological. The feature
that I love the most is that we have access to the
Virginia ABC website. We can look up products
in our store, how much we have in stock, as
well as other stores near and far.
Where customers put their credit card in
is a lot faster now, and customers don't even
have to sign the pad anymore. The hardest part
was having so many eyes around me the very
first day! I was the guinea pig. I had at least 15
people around, including the store manager,
corporate and technical support.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I love working for ABC: the customers; the idea
behind it; I like the atmosphere. My coworkers
really make the day fly by.
Have you tried any new spirits since you
started?
I tried Ketel One vodka. It's really smooth. I'm a
girly girl. I love mixing drinks. I'll take a vodka or
nice Cruzan rum and mix it in with lemonade
or fruit punch or orange juice. And it makes a
great, great drink.
