Here we go again! Masks. No masks.
And masks, again! Months ago (as we
prepared this issue of Spirited Virginia)
Virginians thought we were past the
threat of the COVID-19 pandemic. So,
some of the images of individuals you'll
see in this issue are not wearing masks.
(But ABC employees have been wearing
masks since August!)

As temperatures begin to cool and leaves
start changing colors it's easy to get
excited about the upcoming holidays.
Think brandied sweet potatoes, spiced
cranberries and whiskey bacon cupcakes.
Looking for new recipes to try? In this issue
you'll find several delicious ideas including
a Bourbon Apple Pie (featured on our cover.)
We recommend using John J. Bowman Bourbon, the spirit Virginians chose to include
in ABC's time capsule. See Beyond The Glass on page 14 for a new spin on cooking with
spirits.
If you're purchasing spirits for use in food-rather than cocktail-recipes, our smallersized
bottles are just the ticket! These small bottles are also great for trying a new spirit
or if you're looking to gift a premium product without investing in a 750ml size bottle.

Wine lovers will be interested in our look at spirits aged in wine barrels. A growing
number of distillers are finishing their spirits in barrels previously used to age wine and
the final spirit is delightful. Expand your palate by trying one or more of the spirits on

Our Featured Spirit column this quarter highlights spice rums. Check out our favorites.
In our Gift Guide you'll find recommended jewels in 50 ml sizes for every spirit
category-fill a small basket for your next hostess gift or tuck some away to tie on your

This issue's Distilleries column takes an in-depth look at Loudoun County's Catoctin
Creek Distilling. In upcoming issues we'll highlight other distilleries from throughout
the state.
There's another reason to celebrate. Virginia ABC recently moved into its new
Headquarters and Distribution Center in Hanover County, just 6½ miles (as the crow
flies) from our former central office and warehouse in Richmond. You can read more
about our new facility (with plenty of room for your favorite products) on page 48.
