"We got to the point where we required the bride
to have a wedding planner. The mother of the bride
- or the bride - everything would fall apart almost
inevitably if they didn't have a wedding planner." But
even that didn't guarantee success. "I remember one
wedding," she says, "where the mother of the bride
burst into tears as the wedding planner held the bouquet and the bride walked down the aisle."
Instead of weddings, the inn offers elopement
packages that include photography, flowers and
supper delivered to the couple's cottage. The small
weddings are typically held outside on the grounds
or on the flagstones of the inn's Grand Terrace. "It's
also nice around Christmas, when everything is
decorated, to have the wedding right in front of the
fireplace" inside the inn, she says.
Mary is big on romance. Anniversaries and getaways are made special here, with the rose petals
and scrolls with words both funny and wise about
the joys of being together. Vases of roses, bowls of
chocolate-covered strawberries and buckets of
chilled champagne, all a la carte, invite the kind of
closeness that swells Mary's heart.
"I get an awful lot of pleasure and joy out of
making people happy," she says. "When you've got
a young man that you've been talking to for a couple of weeks, and he's planning his proposal, and
he wants everything to be perfect, we do too. That
creates a wonderful memory for them, and for us
as well. I mean, what could be better than making
dreams come true?" 
