Park Lodge
The Blue Ridge Parkway's Pisgah Inn, at
milepost 408.6 south of Asheville,
North Carolina, has been voted the
number-one National Park lodge
in reader voting in USA Today.
The lodge, built in 1964 and run
by the O'Connell family since
1978, features great views from its
5,000-foot elevation as well as 50
rooms, each with a porch or
balcony.
Glacier National Park's Many
Glacier Hotel was second in the
four-week voting, and Grand
Teton National Park's Jackson Lake
Lodge was third.
The Pisgah Inn is one of only
two lodges along the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway. The
other is Peaks of Otter Lodge at Milepost 86 near
Bedford, Virginia.
The Pisgah Inn, also recognized in the voting for its
fine dining, is open through October. For information:

Carolina "Longest Ride"
Sites
Best-selling author Nicholas Sparks' latest novel-turnedmovie, "The Longest Ride," is set in and was shot in
North Carolina.
Among the places featured in the book and the movie
are Asheville's Omni Grove Park Inn, where older couple
Ruth and Ira honeymooned in the Sparks story, and
Asheville Art Musuem, which houses works in the catalogue of the couple.
And farther west, visit the former Black Mountain
College, attended by Ruth and Ira and now Camp
Rockmont, which includes Lake Eden.
The new book from History Press offers a quirky look at a quirky town.

Milling, whose favorite topic for 26 years of pieces in

the challenges of '70s urban decay than to the process
of recovery and the full realization of today. Before and
current-day photos of the Grove Arcade, for example,
are worth the proverbial price of admission.
