Spartanburg, South Carolina gained its "Hub City" nickname for being a crossing on railroads. This mural is in the downtown district of the
musically rich city.

SOUTH CAROLINA
Under the "Blue Ridge Mountain
Sky" of South Carolina, I have the
Marshall Tucker Band on my mind.
Spartanburg is the birthplace of that
southern rock outfit - a jazzy, jamming, country-and-western band
known for '70s songs like "Can't You
See" and "Take the Highway." Over
a weekend, I sing such songs in this
sprawling South Carolina city, as I
come to Spartanburg with my eightyear-old son, John.
We check into the town's most
towering hotel, the Spartanburg
Marriott. And we enjoy a bird's eye
view from our seventh-floor room.
We also easily find the Chapman
Cultural Center, where we met a redtailed boa, eastern king snake and
turtles in the city's science center.
For dinner, we walk into Wade's, a
place so popular that you have to
stand in line for its fish and chicken
- even on Mondays. This Spartanburg
restaurant may be best known for its
vast vegetable variety. In a dining
room, one colorful mural boasts how
Wade's is "Living on the Vedge."
On Saturday morning, we drive
a few miles to the Hollywild Animal
Park at Wellford and come face to
furry face with lions, tigers, deer,
camels, zebra and bear. Slipping
back to Spartanburg, we land at
Wild Ace for pizza then browse the
shelves at the Hub City Book Shop.
We also check out the Hub City
Railroad Museum, where the host,
Milton Ashley, eagerly dispatches
an explanation of how Spartanburg
got its nickname. "It's called 'The
Hub City,'" he says, "because the
