Lookout Mountain Incline Railway originated in 1895.
of odd formations inside Ruby Falls Cave.
Today's tours span about 90 minutes on
what is nearly a mile-long walk. It makes a
great family outing.
Leo Lambert formed a corporation
in the 1920s to open "Lookout Mountain Cave." Lambert's crew started drilling, eventually sinking an elevator shaft
into the mountains to provide access. That
drilling effort ultimately led to a 17-hour
exploration by Lambert and a friend, and
this pair came back to the surface of what
is now Ruby Falls Cave, bragging about
the beauty of the 145-foot-tall Ruby Falls.
The Incline Railway still provides a thrill ride at Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Rolling beyond Ruby Falls, you're only
a short drive to see Rock City (800-8540675/seerockcity.com). This natural landmark atop Lookout Mountain includes
tours of its rock gardens, including the
whimsical Tortoise Shell and Mushroom
rocks, Observation Point and Swing-ALong Bridge.
Rock City was known as early as 1823
by a pair of missionaries who wrote of its
rock-strewn landscape - far more than
a century before the attraction opened
in 1932. Credit the creation of this "city"
to the imagination of Frieda Carter. This
businessman's wife developed this attraction simply as a rock garden, and she
marked a trail that ended at the giant outcrop now called Lover's Leap.
Later, this attraction gained international fame - thanks to the "See Rock
City" signs painted on hundreds of barn
roofs by sign painter Clark Byers during
the mid-1900s.
Year after year, the Rock City mission
has since remained rock solid and steady.
And, really, it's one that could apply to
any attraction in the Southern Highlands:
