Reforestation Shows Comeback

between union members and mining companies, has been
restored to the National Register of Historic Places.

The U.S. Forest Service, whose Blue Ridge
region covers nine national forests from
Alabama to Virginia, increased its forest
restoration efforts by 9 percent since 2011,
even though fighting wildfires is devouring more than half its annual budget. An
important restoration tool is timber removal, which improves forest resiliency
against fires, droughts and other impacts.
Other tools: improving wildlife habitat
and controlling invasive species. The report featured the Grandfather Restoration
Project in North Carolina to remove Japanese knotweed from the Wilson Creek
Wild and Scenic River Corridor. fs.fed.us
In late April, the board of the nonprofit
Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation issued a
statement opposing two huge proposed
pipelines that would cross the iconic 469mile byway carrying natural gas from
fracking operations in West Virginia. Established in 1997, the foundation is the
official fundraising partner with the Blue
Ridge Parkway, raising more than $10
million to help preserve and enhance the
parkway. "Allowing pipelines to bisect the
Parkway and mar these magnificent vistas
would be a horrendous mistake that we
could never repair," said board chair Jack
