The folklore itinerary begins the way
any account of stories of the mountains

storytellers gather at Oconaluftee Islands

boulder is inscribed with dozens of glyphs
that various Cherokee traditions interpret
differently. A government agent who
travelled to the site in 1900 was told by
one Cherokee that the inscriptions "were
made while the surface of the newly created earth was still soft by a great army of
birds and animals fleeing through the gap
to escape some pursuing danger from the
west." Another said the markings were
"from a spirit chief's horse leaving tracks
in the soft rock after a great flood."
After puzzling over the stone, continue on to the Foxfire Museum and
Heritage Center in Mountain City,
Georgia. Check into the Beechwood
Inn, an outstanding bed and breakfast
with an adjoining restaurant and complementary gingersnap cookies. Spend
the afternoon exploring the preserved
mountain village, and then spend a lazy
Sunday delving deep into a story of the
Blue Ridge Mountains with one of the
books recommended in the accompanying sidebar.
On Monday, drive through the Nantahala National Forest to Cades Cove,
a grassy valley carved out in the middle
of the Great Smoky Mountains National
Park. The cove was a Cherokee hunting
ground for hundreds of years and later the
site of a European settlement. You will be
able to see a number of preserved buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries as
