Drive into Knoxville and spend the
afternoon at the Museum of East
Tennessee History. The centerpiece of
the museum is Voices of the Land: The
People of East Tennessee, an interactive
display that pairs artifacts with dramatized readings of first-person accounts
by people who lived in East Tennessee
(or what would become East Tennessee).
On Tuesday, travel north to visit
two more museums that focus on different aspects of the stories of the Blue
Ridge Mountains and the people who
lived in them. Just outside Knoxville in
Clinton, Tennessee, is the Museum of
Appalachia, a preserved farm and pioneer town that tells the story of the first
European settlers to make East Tennessee their home. The Smithsonian-affiliated site includes three exhibit halls,
gardens and livestock, and it merits an
hour or two.

quickly. Its exhibits on the discovery of
coal at the tail-end of the 19th century and on coal mining in the 20th are
worthwhile and crucial to understanding the story of the mountains.
On Wednesday, continue to Ferrum,
Virginia, and visit the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum at Ferrum College. The rotating exhibits are fascinating, and while the extensive archives are
maintained for academic researchers,
walk-in visitors are welcome to peruse
the collections. You'll find photos and
recordings of "old timers" telling stories
they lived and stories they heard.
Visitors who are especially interested in oral history can continue on to
Blacksburg, Virginia, where the Blue
Ridge Parkway Folklore Project
Records are archived at Virginia Tech.
The collection includes interviews collected in the late 1970s along the stretch
of the Blue Ridge Parkway that runs
from Rocky Knob, Virginia, to Doughton Park, North Carolina. Hear stories
straight from the mouths of a generation that's all but gone in this authentic,

down-to-earth collection.
