* "SHORTENIN' BREAD" - Nora Carpenter (1888-1975) plays the
classic tune on her harmonica and sings. Recorded at her home in
Salyersville, Maggoffin County, Kentucky, on June 26, 1972.
* "FEELING IS WHAT MAKES A SONG" - Daniel Womack talks
about the source of religious songs. Since his religious conversion, he
no longer plays the secular music he performed in his youth. Womack
grew up in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and moved to Roanoke in
1937. He was blind since his early youth. Recorded June 15, 1977.
Storyteller Carmen Deedy performs in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

The final stop is the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough,
Tennessee. Founded by a schoolteach-
* "BLACK MOUNTAIN RAG" - Doc Watson (1923-2012) plays
guitar at the Roanoke Bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Virginia. Doc
is from Deep Gap, North Carolina. He wrote this song. Recorded
September 3, 1965.
