REGIONAL NOTES Volcanic rocks in Virginia? Seems highly unlikely, but a cone-shaped hill in Highland
County called Trimble's Knob is the youngest igneous intrusion east of the Mississippi. Although it's on private
land, it's a prominent landform visible from Route 220, south of Monterey. 38.2441° N, 79.3493° W

5 slices bacon cooked and crumbled
(reserve grease)
2 TBS vinegar
1 TBS lemon juice
1 tsp sugar
½ tsp pepper
A bowl full of lettuce, rinsed, dried,
torn into pieces
6 green onions sliced thin including
tops
Add vinegar, lemon juice, sugar and
pepper to hot grease and stir until
warm. Combine lettuce with green
onions, pour warm dressing over all
and top with bacon crumbles. Serve
immediately.

GARDENING HINTS

Daffodils and tulips will be in full
bloom this month. When they finish
blooming, leave their foliage in place
until it falls over naturally. The leaves
help feed next year's bulbs. If you
need to hide them, gather the leaves
and tie them into a bundle.
