Weathered Ground Brewery in Ghent, West
Virginia, is a classic community hangout featuring a huge outdoor area and live music.
Rely on the bartenders to guide you through
the beer list and help you plan the rest of your
time in southern West Virginia. Call ahead to
ask about touring the brewery.
Moonshine is an essential part of Blue
Ridge drinking culture. A booming industry
has brought the liquor out of the mountains
and onto Main Street, though moonshine
purists might not approve of what most distilleries have to offer. Rest assured that Route
52 Distillery in Ravenna, Kentucky, is no tourist trap. Distiller Howard Arvin, who's also
a dentist, works with his family to produce
small batches of corn whiskey and teach visitors the science and lore of white lighting.
For a different kind of tour, stop by Pretentious Glass Co. in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Actually, start next door at Pretentious Beer
Co., grab a local pint and bring it into studio
where you can watch the glassblowers do
their magic. With abundant free parking just
a hundred yards away, Pretentious Glass and
Pretentious Beer are an easy and worthwhile
stop off I-75 and I-40.
