who went to UVa and studied philosophy and math.
She took a job teaching geometry, algebra III, SAT prep,
and personal finance for two years at St. Margaret's
School in Tappahannock, a girls boarding school, then
went to law school at Washington & Lee University,
graduating this past spring.
Her interest in defense developed quickly and
thoroughly. It was never about the money, she says,
so corporate law was always simply part of the "wide
spread of law" she has touched on because "I want to
feel prepared."
She was recruited upon graduation by a firm from
Kentucky and by Lichtenstein & Fishwick in Roanoke,
a firm noted for its high-profile criminal cases over the
years. Easy choice. "Their work and their reputation"
impressed her, she says. "This is the kind of law I want
to practice."
John Lichtenstein and John Fishwick were once described by former U.S. Attorney John Brownlee - a
frequent opponent - as "two of the finest attorneys
in Virginia ... Both are gentlemen and represent the
very best of the bar." In headline to a story on the firm,
The Roanoke Times called them "Good lawyers, good
people."
Beyond that, though, there was Roanoke. "I love it,"
she says. "It's gorgeous. The people make me feel welcome. There are great recreation fields, tennis courts,
trails. More people are outside all the time. There are
races, Saturday on City Market. It's incredible. I feel
like it's a fit, active place."
Part of her fitness involves a sport called "ultimate,"
or "ultimate flying disc," which sprang from ultimate
Frisbee. It looks a little like flag football, but players
can't run with the disc. There are an estimated 4.9 million players in the U.S. and in this valley there is Roanoke Ultimate (roanokeultimate.com). Meyer played
on the club level at UVa and is with a team called Blud
now. It is a co-ed sport, which makes it even more appealing to young professionals looking for love - and
some healthy exercise - in all the right places.
Meyer has settled into a Raleigh Court rental, near
some of those fields she adores, and has found that "it
costs a little more" than she's accustomed to forking
over and asserts that she "could use an Apple Store and
an Ann Taylor," but otherwise it's just about perfect.
