a car, but has been able to get around the valley and
go grocery shopping on his bike.
Downtown's housing options include lofts and
townhomes for rent and purchase. Rents run from
$700 up; purchases from just under $200,000 to
$500,000-plus.
Outlying communities also provide biking options.
Some of Interstate Bike Route 76, part of the TransAmerica Bike Trail, runs through Botetourt County
in the Troutville area and in Roanoke County on
routes 776 and 311. Residential communities near
U.S. 220 south and 221 have good access to the Blue
Ridge Parkway, which veteran biker Michael Frodyma
considers ideal for road biking: "It's well paved and
has great hills and the motorists driving on it are not
usually going very fast," says Frodyma, who even bikes
in Denmark on trips for his employer, Novozymes in
Salem. He drives to the top of Bent Mountain on U.S.
221 and then bikes to Floyd and back. Of course, he
says, Carvins Cove Natural Reserve on the RoanokeBotetourt County line near I-81 is the nirvana for bi-

cyclists because of its many trails of varying difficulties.

GOURMAND
Downtown Roanoke has more than three-score restaurants, which makes it ideal for those who like to
dine out. WDBJ Television anchor and reporter Nadia Singh, a native Washingtonian who has been in
the valley just over a year, lives downtown and has
sampled its wealth of eateries.
"That's what young people do," she says, "we go out
to eat." She enjoys Metro!, especially the sea bass, and
Jack Brown's "where you can get a craft beer or a regular beer and a burger." Frankie Rowland's Steakhouse
"is always consistently good." Singh also gives a nod
to Alexander's, one of downtown's oldest restaurants.

The desire to own a small farm lies deep in many
hearts, but finding the right spot can be difficult, although possible. Botetourt and Franklin counties
are the best options.
